The recent flooding in Accra was a major disaster. Every single year the city of Accra experiences major flooding during the rainy season with disastrous consequences. This year over 150 people died when a gas station exploded after leaking fuel. Are Ghanaians doomed to experience flooding again next year? What will it take to avoid another disaster?
In this interview with David Ampofo, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ga Central talks about the recent flooding and how it affected areas within his municipality resulting in several deaths.
“I think the situation got worse because people were dumping waste in the drains and most of the drains got choked,” Aristo Aryee argues. He says various factors accounted for the flooding but the volume of rain this year contributed significantly to the heavy flooding in Accra.
